Version

The ver.req trick works on this camera. To retrieve the version information, create a new blank file called ver.req on the root of an sd card. Insert the card in the camera. Power up to review mode (or switch from shoot mode, they both work). Hold the 'FUNC. SET' key then press the 'DISP.' key. Something like the following should come up

Canon PowerShot S80
P-ID:30FA NT

Firmware Ver GM1.00F
No error
Sep 24 2005 18:11:11

The date and time refer to the firmware build date (i think) not the current time.

A firmware upgrade to 1.00g is available from https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B08pqRtyrObjbUw2RDdtX1JzZ28/edit?usp=sharing (MD5: b11fc974786844782c0e8f308a5fb818, SHA1: 8c62cf447f6c5689644b71a3508c42c766bfd230); To upgrade, copy the unzipped .FIR file to an SD card, start the camera in Playback mode, press MENU, scroll down to the bottom and press 'Firm Update...'. After upgrade, the ver.req trick reports (on my camera):

Canon PowerShot S80
P-ID:30FA PAL

Firmware Ver GM1.00G
E18
Dec 19 2005 17:03:55

Note: E18 seems to be a harmless error code. After the upgrade from GM1.00F, my camera said "No error" in this field. --Flix

Porting process & links

In November 2009, revivery released a first version of CHDK for the S80 for testing purposes:

http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=336.msg42915#msg42915

This testing release is compatible to firmware version GM1.00G - see above for the firmware image and update procedure. Many features are working, but more testing and development is required.

Note, that once a SD card with write lock and a modified bootsector is inside the camera, the only way to switch the camera on is by opening the lense cover or holding the play button for more than 2 seconds.
